Maintaining Eye Health in a Digital Classroom

Updated: 4 days ago

Learning in today’s classrooms is vastly different from a few years ago. With the rise of digital learning tools, laptops and online classes have become a staple. While technology makes learning more convenient, increased screen time can strain our eyes and impact our eye health.

Here are some simple yet effective ways to reduce eye strain and maintain healthy vision in a digital classroom.

  1. Adjusting display settings

  • A screen that is too bright can cause glare, while a dim screen makes the eyes work harder to focus. Both lead to eye strain.

    • Adjust brightness to match the room’s lighting to avoid glare from the computer screen.

  • Blue light from screens mimics daylight, disrupting sleep cycles and contributing to eye fatigue.

    • Enable “Blue Light Filter” in display settings.

Optimizing display settings can help one reduce discomfort and support long-term eye health.

  1. Maintain a good distance from your screen

  • When the screen is too close, your eyes struggle to focus. And if the screen is too far, you may squint, causing unnecessary strain.

    • Keep your screen at arm’s length (about 50-60 cm) from your eyes.

    • If text is hard to read, increase the font size instead of moving closer.

Maintaining proper screen distance reduces visual stress and promotes better posture.

  1. Take breaks

  • Even with proper settings and positioning, staring at a screen for too long can still cause discomfort. Taking breaks gives your eyes time to rest and refocus.

    • Every hour, you should aim to take a short break of a few minutes

    • You can do so by taking a toilet break (drink lots of water!), standing up and stretching, or even just looking away for a while.

These breaks prevent digital eye strain and improve focus throughout the day, making one more productive.

Why does this matter?

Digital learning is here to stay, but that doesn’t mean we should ignore its impact on eye health. By using these tips, students can protect their vision and create a more comfortable learning experience.
